As a new mom myself I know that putting on a full face of makeup everyday is probably not going to happen. I also know that I look tired from lack of sleep (yawn) and that a little bit of makeup, skincare, and healthy eating can help make me look more like myself (the before kids, not sleep deprived at all me!). I turned to beauty expert and author, Alexis Wolfer, of the AMAZING online women’s magazine, The Beauty Bean, to get some advice on how to look fab even when I haven’t slept more than 3 consecutive hours…
Fit Fab Mommy (FFM): How can new moms recreate the “pregnancy glow?”
The Beauty Bean (TBB): I know that you’re tight on time, low on energy, and likely feel guilty taking any “me time,” but just a few minutes can make all the difference. Be sure to exfoliate your skin at least once a week (even just adding a packet of white sugar to your favorite facial cleanser will do the trick!), stay hydrated, and eat healthfully. I would also suggest switching to a cream blush (RMS makes a great organic one you dab on your lips and cheeks!) to give you a pop of color as well as added dewiness. Also, continue to take your pre-natal vitamins after you give birth to help prevent the loss of your hormonally amped up hair!
FFM: How do you get rid of dark, puffy under eye circles from lack of sleep?
TBB: Try to sleep with your head slightly elevated to keep water retention at bay and use a caffeinated eye cream to help to constrict the blood vessels causing the discoloration. And keep that eye cream of yours in the fridge to help reduce puffiness upon application. Also, make sure you’re eating enough vitamin K (found in kale, parsley, etc) to help fight under eye circles from the inside out.
FFM: What 3-4 makeup products are must-haves for new mamas?
TBB: It’s all about quick and easy products that work double duty and don’t require much time! 1. An organic tinted lip balm or cream blush that works double duty on cheeks and lips. I love RMS lip2cheek (it’s a cream blush that doubles as a tinted lip balm. Plus, it’s healthy for you and baby too!). 2. An eyelash curler (it will help make you look more awake, instantly) 3. Makeup removing wipes (no matter how tired you are, cleansing your face is essential so keep wipes by your bed to make sure you never skip just because you’re too tired).
FFM: With only 5 minutes to apply makeup how can a tired mama simplify her
makeup routine and still look fab?
TBB: Use two-in-one products (like a luminizer you apply on your cheek bones and your eyes, a cream blush you can put on your lips, and a foundation with SPF). It’s all about cutting out steps! Also, don’t be afraid to use your fingers to apply your makeup. Just make sure they’re clean – but the warmth of your hands can help makeup apply more naturally and more quickly – and you can cross “clean makeup brushes” off your to do list.
FFM: Any words of wisdom for new moms?
TBB: Be kind to yourself. You’re not “out of shape,” you’re in different shape. You created another human life so give yourself a break and take care of yourself.
